Mehmet Türker
Mehmet Türker was born in 1950 in the village of Sindelli (Sindeltsi), Kardzhali Province. He graduated from Sofia University with a degree in Turkish Philology. He opposed the policy of forced assimilation of Turks by the communist regime in late 1984, for which he was arrested and sent to the Belene camp and later to the camp in Bobovdol. In 1987, he was deported to the village of Dragovishta, Kyustendil. On May 26, 1989, he was deported with his family to Austria in a cattle train. After a two-day stay in an immigrant camp in Vienna, the family was transported to Turkey by Turkish Airlines.
Türker settled in Istanbul. There he worked as a reporter for the newspaper Türkiye and the magazine Ekovitrin. After retiring, he published the magazine Rumeli for 12 years. In recent years, he has been involved in documentary writing. He is the author of more than ten books, including “The Island of Belene. Memories from the Fiery Circle of Torture” (memoirs), “The Rhodope Ahmed Aga Tumrushliya” (research) and others.
