Erich Lessing
(1923-2018)
Erich Lessing was a very important Austrian photographer, who worked for MAGNUM PHOTOS between 1955 and 1979.
He was born in Vienna into a Jewish family and was forced to leave Austria in 1939 because of Hitler’s rise to power.
His mother remained in Vienna and later was murdered at Auschwitz.
After the war Lessing returned to Austria in 1947. His photographs were published internationally in Time, Fortune, Life, Paris Match, Picture Post, Epoca and Quick. He documented politics in post-war Europe, especially in Communist countries.
In the 50s he travelled to Turkey and documented the wave of expulsion of Bullgarian Turks.
Erich Lessing’s photographs are published here for the first time.
